General Dentistry

Our General Dentists serve as your primary care provider. They will evaluate and maintain the health of your teeth and gums and advise on what you can do to maintain good oral health.

Fillings
Fillings are the easiest way to treat small cavities that have formed on your teeth. Treatment consists of removing the decayed area and replacing it with a small amount of tooth colored material. This process can remove sensitivity and prevent cavities from becoming larger and spreading throughout the mouth.
Crowns & Bridges
If a tooth's structure is weakened by significant decay, then a crown restoration is required. The process begins by your doctor removing all decay and old fillings from the tooth. Your tooth is digitally scanned and is sent to our in-house laboratory to create your crown. The completed crown is finally cemented on top of your prepared tooth. In most cases this process is completed on the same day, split up into two appointments. The process for creating a bridge is similar to that of a crown, but it usually takes several days for us to create between your initial and final appointments.
Veneers
A veneer is similar to a crown, except that it only covers the front-facing facial side of your teeth. Veneers are used in a variety of situations, such as tooth color correction, to repair a cracked tooth, or to close an unwanted gap between teeth. Since they are mainly used for aesthetic purposes, veneers are typically only placed on the front teeth. In most cases veneers can be created and cemented in the same day, so you won't have to worry about a later appointment.
TMJ Treatment
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder can lead discomfort when chewing, misaligned bite, teeth grinding, or jaw clenching. Depending on your specific case, our doctors can use a variety of means to relieve your TMJ pain.
Full-Mouth Rehabilitation
Sometimes extensive treatment is required to improve your oral health. Anything you need from a filling to implants, one tooth or thirty-two, ECDD is here to help you smile again.
Mouthguards & Appliances
There are a wide variety of dental mouthguards and appliances that ECDD can custom design to perfectly fit your unique smile, many of which are created on-site at our in-house laboratory. Nightguards, sportsguards, retainers, and dentures are just a few of the appliances that are available.

Hygiene

Our Dental Hygienists are here to help keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. They work with our doctors to examine patients for any signs of oral diseases, such as periodontal disease or gingivitis, and provide preventative treatment.

Prophylaxis Cleaning
Dental prophylaxis cleanings, also known as a regular teeth cleanings, are one of the most important dental treatments in the prevention of gum disease and tooth decay. They consist of thoroughly cleaning the area above the gum line of all plaque and tartar that may have accumulated since your last visit, resulting in the removal of stains, fresher breath, and improved oral health. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends regular teeth cleanings twice annually as a preventative measure, but is recommended every 3-4 months for those who suffer from periodontitis.
Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure which removes plaque and tartar stuck above and below the gumline. Scaling is the process of using a scaling instrument to scrape off existing plaque and tartar. Root planing is the process of smoothing the tooth's root surfaces, allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach itself to the tooth. This procedure is necessary after the gums, bones, and surrounding tissues have become damaged due to periodontal disease.
Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis and gum disease, affects the gum tissue and bone that surrounds your teeth. It is caused when a gum infection called gingivitis is left untreated. Periodontal disease affects the connection points between your teeth and gums, creating pockets between the teeth and gums where more food and bacteria can easily accumulate. This can lead to recessed gum tissue and significant bone loss. When periodontal disease has reached this point, our endodontist can treat the gums to prevent the condition from worsening. This treatment is used in conjunction with three month periodontal maintenance visits (deep gum cleanings) with one of our hygienists.
Dental Exam
A dental exam is a routine check of your overall oral health. It consists of your hygienist checking behind and between your teeth for any warning signs of cavities, measure the depth of the pockets in your gums around your teeth, as well as checking your gums for swelling, redness, or sores. This is also when your hygienist will be taking any necessary x-rays to examine areas that are not visible with the naked eye.
Sealants
Sealants are a common preventative measure that is taken when your hygienist identifies certain teeth that are prone to decay. Deeper pits and fissures on the teeth are more likely to trap food and plaque which will eventually lead to decay if not removed. Sealants are placed in these pits and fissures to create a barrier which prevents this harmful buildup.
Oral Cancer Screening
Initial stages of oral cancer may not be noticed by the patient, so your hygienist will look closer for early signs of lesions, sores, or ulcers. They will feel the area under your jaw, the sides of your neck, the insides of your lips and cheeks, the sides of your tongue, and the roof and floor of your mouth. This exam happens at every routine dental visit.

Orthodontics

Our Orthodontist works to align improper bites and straighten crooked teeth to ensure healthy function and appearance. This can be achieved through a variety of methods, most often including braces or Invisalign treatment.

What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics corrects irregularities of the teeth, bite, jaws, and related facial abnormalities to enhance oral health and facial appearance for both children and adults. It is a technologically advanced field, which offers many sophisticated solutions to correct malocclusion and other cosmetic problems.
Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
There are many advantages to well-aligned teeth, including better oral hygiene, easier cleaning, clearer speech, and a more pleasant smile. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Alignment problems can contribute to the abnormal wear of a tooth's surface, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints. These can lead to chronic headaches and face or neck pain. Treatment can help prevent these problems, along with giving you a more confident smile.
Braces
Braces move the teeth at a slower speed that is optimized for the most comfort and effectiveness. Brackets are bonded to each tooth, and are connected with a steel wire and multicolored bands. The wire and bands are replaced at each appointment.
Invisalign
Invisalign treatment straightens your teeth without the use of traditional metal braces. They are removable retainers that are virtually invisible, and come without the eating restrictions associated with braces. Invisalign is also considered to be much more comfortable than metal braces.
Appliances
Certain treatments may be performed with the aid of a removable appliance. There are a wide variety of appliances that may be used during treatment, such as space maintainers, palate expanders, and retainers. Your doctor will inform you of any appliances that may need to be used during treatment.

Endodontics

Endodontics is a highly skilled dental specialty involving diagnosing and treating tooth pain and performing root canal treatment. Our Endodontist specializes in treating the infected pulp or the nerve of a tooth, plus the infected areas around the bone that supports the tooth.

When is Endodontic Treatment Necessary?
Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside of the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The most common reasons for inflammation or infection are deep cavities, repeated dental procedures, cracks, or chips. Trauma can also cause inflammation and often shows up as discoloration of the tooth. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
Root Canal Treatment
Endodontics is most commonly associated with root canal treatment. A root canal is required when a tooth suffers a deep fracture that damages the pulp. The pulp is located in the root of the tooth, and is where the nerves and blood vessels are contained. Root canal treatment is when the canals of the tooth are cleaned out so that the majority of the tooth's structure can be saved. Contrary to popular belief, modern technology makes this non-surgical treatment as pain free as getting a filling.
Apicoectomy
In the event that a root canal is insufficient in healing a damaged tooth, an apicoectomy may be performed. This surgical procedure involves the endodontist making an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflammation. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip (apex). A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root, restoring full functionality.
Cracked Teeth
Cracked teeth can induce pain when chewing, temperature sensitivities, or even the release of biting pressure. Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of the crack, but early detection is necessary to avoid the condition worsening. Please contact us immediately if you are experiencing associated symptoms.
Traumatic Injury
Traumatic injury to the teeth is a serious matter. It can be caused by anything from sports injuries to a car accident. Teeth can be dislodged, where they are forced deep into their sockets, or avulsed, where they are completely knocked out of the mouth. If this happens, the tooth must be cleaned and remain moist in order to save it. If possible, push the tooth back into its socket. Seek immediate dental care.

Periodontics

Periodontics is a highly skilled dental specialty involving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and oral inflammation. They are also extensively trained in the placement of dental implants.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are an excellent restoration option if you are missing a single tooth, multiple teeth, or are looking for a more secure alternative to a denture. An implant is an artificial root made of titanium, to which a fabricated crown, bridge, or denture is attached. Implant placement prevents bone loss and adjacent teeth shifting out of place, allowing the implant to function like a real tooth.
This treatment is used in conjunction with frequent deep gum cleanings with one of our hygienists.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a procedure performed to increase the amount of bone in a part of the jaw where excessive bone has been lost or additional support is needed. This is required for patients who are going to receive implants in place of missing teeth or with the occurrence of bone loss due to the effects of gum disease.
Crown Lengthening
A tooth that is broken or cracked below the gums is in danger of not surviving. However, in many cases these types of fractures can be treated. Crown lengthening allows the gum line to be lowered to gain access to the damaged portion of the tooth, allowing for a restoration which can save the tooth structure.
Gingival Biopsy
A gingival biopsy tests concerning or abnormal gum tissue to help diagnose a variety of oral lesions. The information from the biopsy can be used along with the findings of imaging tests to help your doctor diagnose oral cancer as early as possible.

Please call our office if your statement does not reflect your insurance payment within that time frame. Any remaining balance after your insurance has paid is your responsibility. Your prompt remittance is appreciated. We can make arrangements for a monthly payment plan but this must be done prior to the actual procedure.

Post-Treatment Basics

Remember that it will take time to adjust to the feel of your new bite. When the bite is altered or the position of the teeth is changed it takes several days for the brain to recognize the new position of your teeth or their thickness as normal. If you continue to detect any high spots or problems with your bite, call our office at (508) 880-0802 so we can schedule an adjustment appointment.

It is normal to experience some hot and cold sensitivity. The teeth require some time to heal after removal of tooth structure and will be sensitive in the interim. Your gums may also be sore for a few days. Warm salt water rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) three times a day will reduce pain and swelling. A mild pain medication (one tablet of Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin) every 3-4 hours) should ease any residual discomfort. Don't be concerned if your speech is affected for the first few days. You'll quickly adapt and be speaking normally. You may notice increased salivation. This is because your brain is responding to the new size and shape of your teeth. This should subside to normal in about a week.

A few things to remember

Daily brushing and flossing are a must for your new dental work. Daily plaque removal is critical for the long-term success of your new teeth, as are regular cleaning appointments.

Any food that can crack, chip or damage a natural tooth can do the same to your new teeth. Avoid hard foods and substances (such as beer nuts, peanut brittle, ice, or biting your fingernails or on pencils) and sticky candies. Smoking will stain your new teeth. Minimize or avoid foods that stain such as coffee, red wine, tea and berries.

If you engage in sports let us know so we can make a custom mouthguard. If you grind your teeth at night, wear the night guard we have provided for you. Adjusting to the look and feel of your new smile will take time. If you have any problems or concerns, please let us know. We always welcome your questions.

Fillings

When an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has completely worn off. It is very easy to bite or burn your tongue or lip while you are numb.

It is normal to experience some hot, cold & pressure sensitivity after your appointment. Injection sites may also be sore. Ibuprofen (Motrin), Tylenol or aspirin (one tablet every 3-4 hours as needed for pain) work well to alleviate the tenderness. If pressure sensitivity persists beyond a few days or if the sensitivity to hot or cold increases, contact our office at (508) 880-0802.

You may chew with your composite fillings as soon as the anesthetic completely wears off, since they are fully set when you leave the office.

If your bite feels uneven, if you have persistent pain, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please call our office at (508) 880-0802.

Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges usually take one or two appointments to complete. In the first visit, the teeth are prepared and molds of the mouth are taken. Temporary crowns or bridges are placed to protect the teeth while the custom restoration is being made. Since the teeth will be anesthetized, the tongue, lips and roof of the mouth may be numb. Please refrain from eating and drinking hot beverages until the numbness is completely worn off.

Occasionally a temporary crown may come off. Call us at (508) 880-0802 if this happens and bring the temporary crown with you so we can re-cement it. It is very important for the temporary crown to stay in place, as it will prevent other teeth from moving and compromising the fit of your final restoration.

To keep your temporary crown in place, avoid eating sticky foods (gum), hard foods, and if possible, chew on the opposite side of your mouth. It is important to brush normally, but floss carefully and don't pull up on the floss which may dislodge the temporary but pull the floss out from the side of the temporary crown.

It is normal to experience some temperature and pressure sensitivity after each appointment. The sensitivity should subside a few weeks after the placement of the final restoration. Mild pain medications may also be used as directed by our office.

If your bite feels uneven, if you have persistent pain, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please call our office at (508) 880-0802.

Tooth Extraction

After tooth extraction, it's important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That's why we ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing still persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times.

After the blood clot forms, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot as it aids healing. Do not rinse vigorously, suck on straws, smoke, drink alcohol or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities will dislodge or dissolve the clot and retard the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours as this will increase blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.

After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and experience some swelling. An ice pack can be applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Take pain medications as prescribed. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours.

Use the pain medication as directed. Call the office at (508) 880-0802 if the medication doesn't seem to be working. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time, even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone. Drink lots of fluid and eat nutritious soft food on the day of the extraction. You can eat normally as soon as you are comfortable.

It is important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours. This should include brushing and flossing your teeth at least once a day. This will speed healing and help keep your mouth fresh and clean.

After a few days you will feel fine and can resume your normal activities. If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling for 2-3 days, or a reaction to the medication, call our office immediately at (508) 880-0802.

The health and well-being of our patients is our top priority, now and always. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, we are closely following and adhering to precautions advised by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

We want to assure you that we are taking continuous steps to ensure that our office remains a safe place for every patient. It's important for you to know that dentists are experts in infection control. For instance, we have been trained to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as flu, HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis. The precautions we take every day will also help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

COVID-19 safety precautions

We follow precautions developed by the CDC to protect both health care personnel and patients. We sterilize all instruments after each use and clean each dental operatory after each patient visit, using surface disinfectants that kill all known infectious diseases, including coronavirus. Dedicated hand washing and one-time use disposable materials also help maintain a safe environment for our patients. Our staff are regularly trained in these procedures.

Working with our facility managers, we've ensured that our cleaning team has a sufficient stock of supplies. We have asked them to apply additional focus and time on cleaning door handles, faucets, and other items with high-traffic hand touches. Magazines in our waiting areas are also a risk from frequent contact, so they have been removed.

Don't delay your dental care

Seeing your dentist is a vital investment for your general health. Our office remains open to care for our patients following the above guidelines. If you have a fever, are exhibiting symptoms of respiratory illness, or have had recent contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you may be a risk to other patients or staff members. If you are experiencing fever (greater than 100.4), cough, or shortness of breath, please remain at home and contact your primary care physician immediately.

If you would like to reschedule an upcoming appointment or talk through any concerns, please feel free to contact our office.

Remember, the best way to protect yourself and your community is with everyday preventative actions, like washing hands often and disinfecting surfaces regularly. These actions will help minimize and slow the spread of the coronavirus. For the most up-to-date Covid-19 information and guidance, please visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus.
